Toilet Paper and RVers

Thursday, January 27, 2011

Bet you think I'm going to write about what kind of toilet paper to use....wrong! This is about what toilet paper manufacturers are doing to us.

It all started so innocently. Remember when coffee prices went sky high so rather than raise the price they decreased the can size. Suddenly we were paying 16oz prices for 12oz.

Next time I noticed it on canned goods. Same thing. One pound cans were now down to 14.5oz but for the same price. I'm sure you can think of more....

Well, now it's hit the toilet paper companies. No, it's not the number of sheets on a roll (they know we look at that). It's not the ply because as RVers we search out the one-ply brands. First they started decreasing the thickness of the ply...not bad in two-ply but in single ply it really makes a mess.

Okay, time to switch to a pricier brand...Scott rather than store brand. Next thing I notice is the rolls are narrower. Seriously!! I stacked up the new rolls beside the older ones...almost an inch difference. Put it on the toilet paper roller....slides side to side because it's so narrow!

What next? Jeesh!!! So, anyone notice anything else being subjected to the incredible shrink ray?

Till next time - keep on rollin',

  1. They made the PLY thinner? Really? That may be why I saw the NEW and IMPROVED 3-Ply paper the other day. I thought it was ridiculous but if they are making each layer thinner than I guess 3-ply is the new 2-ply. LOL

I did notice the rolls were not as wide and the new "double roll" I bought yesterday was WAY thinner than previous double rolls that wouldnt even fit on my roller. I will have to keep an eye on this.

  2. Lots of bacon packages are 12 ounces but the price went up too.

  3. We saw cases of Coke with 20 in them instead of 24 yesterday.

  4. Clearly you have a future in consumer protection. Keep up the good work!

  5. Just noticed that Santitas Tortilla Triangles now come in a 12 oz bag as compared to previous 16 oz bag, but the price is still $2.00 for 4 oz less! Guess I won't be buying those anymore! Note, they are also made by Frito-Lay who makes many other brands of Tortilla chips.

  6. It'sa Communist plot....same price, smaller packaging...all over and in every type of venue...We really need to wake up and complain!!!!! Do they think we are stupid??

  7. "20 oz" bottled soft drinks are now "16", AND the price has gone up here in AL. I don't buy them often, so I've only noticed it recently.

Ice cream (which my Little One adores!) is no longer a half-gallon in the cartons. It is 56 ozs.

    Good post!

    Kerri in AL :-)

  8. All I can add is that it's really CRAPPY that companies do these things thinking we'll never notice!!!!

  9. Yep, we have noticed the same thing happening in Canada too! They think we won't notice these "small" changes, but we do. Doesn't seem to be much we can do about it, other than not to buy that product. That's hard to do when the other manufacture's follow suit.

  10. I just bought Scott toilet paper the other day and I didn't notice that it was narrower. They pulled one over on me! I have noticed that the ice cream cartons are smaller now. I start thinking, "that's a good price for ice cream" and then I realize that it's a small box. It definitely is happening with more and more items. I really wish they wouldn't advertise them as "new and improved". Not!

  11. Many products now have half-ounces, such as 7.5 or even 6.5 ounces in what we used to buy 8 ounces, and as you said, for the same price, or sometimes, even more. grrrrr. Just about any time you see new packaging, it is because they are trimming the net contents. BTW, when we buy something with "new, handy handles for easy pouring," take a look. I'm betting it is a smaller net weight than its predecessor!!

  12. TUNA! Used to be a 7oz. can and now is about 5.5oz. Guess it's been that way for awhile. BUT if you buy the Albacore at Costco it is still the bigger can and it tastes SOOO much better than the others. I'll pay a little more for good quality. The quart of mayonnaise I buy to go into that tuna is now just 30oz. instead of 32.

  13. Hmmm, after this post, will any RVer shake your hand? ROFLOL

  14. I am in agreement with Carol concerning Ice Cream! Most brand name packages have gone from a full half gallon of 64oz down to just 48oz. While I can make allowances for TP, Ice Cream is simply pushing the downsizing trend too far!

  15. Any possibility that I can get in front of the incredible shrinking ray....LOL!

  16. Costco's toilet paper is wider than Scott's (by a little bit), is septic and RV friendly, and each roll is individually wrapped inside the package. But you have to buy so darn many at a time -- fills up the basement storage bins! It's also less expensive for a great quality. Your finger never breaks through! (Eeeeewwwwwww!)

  17. A gallon of paint is no longer a gallon, but they still refer to it as a gallon.... tricky! It will catch you when you think you have bought enough to cover, but you come up just a little bit short.

  18. Saltines. It used to be tricky to cut open the sleeve without breaking any of the crackers as they were filled to the very end. Now there's a good inch of paper before the first cracker, too much room!

  19. Get real!! They have got to be kidding. It takes half the roll now to do your job, now they want us to use the whole roll I guess.

  20. I bought a package of Sensodyne toothpaste at Costco. When I opened the tube, there was only 1/2 a tube of paste. The rest was air. The appearance was "large" tubes.

  21. I wish they'd aim that shrinking ray at me for a few minutes!

It seems to me that its a dishonest way to do business.

  22. Only thing I don't see shrinking are my thighs.

  23. They'll get you anyway they can. I first noticed this on ice cream too. Crazy stuff!

  24. Now you have me looking at my toilet paper roll. I never noticed the change. I wish I had a shrink ray for other things in my life but not my toilet paper.

  25. That is something I never noticed! But of course Sheryl Crow says you only need one square so it wouldn't matter, would it?

I also have noticed cereal boxes. If you try to compare prices you have to notice the difference in the size of the boxes.

The government also says there was no inflation last year so no cost of living adjustment. I sure saw my cost of living going up with just gas alone!
