It's official - the new Backend of Nowhere Garage blog is now live! This has been Stu's dream ever since he was little and it's finally started. He will be blogging there as the garage gets built and then, hopefully, as he chronicles his projects. Hope you will follow him!

"What's Going On" - Thank you, Marvin Gaye

If you think we've been busy lately, you're right. Me with writing and Stu with a new-to-him motorcycle trailer. He is prepping for his group ride with the Run for the Wall group, leaving from Cookeville on the 22nd, headed to DC and then spending several weeks in Maryland with family. His old partner, who now lives in California, is riding the whole route.

Oh, the trailer. Last year we sold BRAT2, believing we had no need for it since we didn't foresee any long motorcycle trips in our future. Fast forward to now and even though I won't be doing any long trips, Stu still has the itch.

BCAT now has new tires, new rims, new coupler, repainted frame, new locks, new lights, all new wiring, and spray paint job (for now). He also installed a new trailer hitch on the Tri-Glide (Black Cherry).

So I will be a motorcycle widow till the middle of June. At least I have the #2Doods to keep me company (and bark away any intruders - if the sound of our security alarm doesn't do it). LOL!

If you haven't visited my author blog in a while, maybe it's time to check it out. I'm writing a lot of flash fiction (ultra short stories) as well as sharing a few personal tidbits from time to time.

5/12/17: Celebrate the Small Things

Some of you may remember my participating in the Celebrate the Small Things on my author blog a few years back. I've decided to join in again but with this blog. Because we are snowbirds, in general, and sitting in Maryland for 2+ months for my surgery, we will have less to post about. Joining in the blog hop means you will see at least one post a week.

So every Friday I will post about a few things that happened during the week. Mostly good things, but it might even be "surviving" a not-so-good thing. LOL!

My small things for this past week:

• I'm so thankful for a "handy hubby". When our dryer quit, out of warranty of course, he opened it up and diagnosed the issue. He ordered the part and it arrived Tuesday. He installed it and it's now working.
  
  
  
  Then he did the annual chore of sanitizing our fresh water tank which included checking the anode rod in our water heater and replacing the filter under the kitchen sink. Normally things go smoothly, this time a lot of water was spilled under the sink entailing removal of everything in the bottom of two cabinets. But it's now replaced and working well and we have water in our tank that is safe to drink.
  
  
  
  
• I GOT A HAIRCUT! I was way overdue and with our daughter's wedding this weekend, much needed. I opted for convenience and tried Sport Clips. They aren't just for guys...us gals with short hair can use them and 1) save money and 2) get some extras like a tea tree oil shampoo and massage AFTER the cut, which is perfect as it gets rid of all those pesky little hairs.
  
  
  
  
• The hydrangea bush in the front yard where we are parked is blooming. Gorgeous!

Rolling into Las Vegas - Trip Home

We did as we said...set our alarm and got an early start for our trip from San Bernardino, CA to Las Vegas, NV. We lost a little time chatting with a truck driver, originally from Czechoslovakia, who was very interested in Stu's trike.

Perfect riding weather, we stopped for gas and ice for the cooler, then jumped on the interstate for an uneventful trip. The scenery was pretty although the road north was fairly straight. Up and down in altitude, rocks and mountains provided a good view.

We stopped in Baker for gas and lunch, giving The Mad Greek a try. We were both glad we did...great food and fun atmosphere combined with top-notch service.

Back on the road we finally arrived in Vegas to busy but not heavy traffic. We located our hotel, Tuscany Suites, and got checked in. Wow! HUGE room, kitchenette area with coffee maker and frig (microwave only for an extra fee), sofa, chair, coffee table, bathroom with separate shower and tub, plus a great patio overlooking the pool plus two chairs and a table.

Added bonus...nice laundry facility! Since we arrived early, we got all our laundry done and had plenty of time for a nice dinner in their casual restaurant. I finally got my birthday lasagna (huge portion and delicious) and a Newcastle Brown Ale. Stu had shrimp marinara and an Alaskan Amber Ale. Both beers were on tap - sweet!

Oh, we liked it so well that we cancelled the condo and extended two days here. We're paying around $50 including taxes. Can't go wrong for that....

Welcome to our new blog home!

Welcome to our new blog home! We've combined all our blogs except "Retired in Cuenca" into THIS ONE for several reasons.

1. KISS - Keep It Super Simple
   It's much easier on us (okay, ME) to maintain one blog for all interests. But because our time in Cuenca is so different, we will keep that separate - for now.
    
2. Easier on the readers (YOU) to only have one blog to check for updates.
    
3. Our full-time RVing has come to an end. We will continue to RV part-time (winters in FL or AZ) once we come back from Ecuador but that won't be a major part of our lifestyle.
    
4. All our passions and history in one spot. First there was our RV blog, then Sadie's blog, followed by Route 66 and our property in Tennessee. ALL those posts are now here under one umbrella!
    
5. I will post an a general update once in a while from Ecuador - as well as life in general ramblings and anything I think you might find interesting (like publishing a new book?).

We hope you will continue to follow us, first on our Route 66 trip in September and October, then as we prepare to move to Cuenca, Ecuador. We anticipate coming back to the US next fall and visit our families.

Now we need to figure out a new tagline....anyone got a suggestion?

So what's up?

Our time here is winding down and we've enjoyed it here at Peace River Thousand Trails Park in Wauchula/Zolfo Springs area. Quiet park, at least where we are parked. LARGE lot, at least where we are parked. We've managed lots of down time for relaxation, getting over the colds we brought back from our cruise. We've visited friends in Sun City and bought a delicious half-flat of strawberries that just melt in your mouth.

We've gone to the movies, my pick, and saw The Hobbit (which I absolutely LOVED). We've gone bicycle riding almost every day. We've done a little shopping and we've done a little general catch-up on chores. Not bad for an eight day stay.

Tuesday we move back to the Clermont area and our first stay at the Thousand Trails park there. We've heard from our friend Nick Russell, who is there now, that it's packed. This park was too, we ended up with a 30 amp water/electric only but we opted out of the lottery for the full hookup sites since we loved where we were parked. We'll be there for two weeks before we move back to Bee's RV Park - we'll be swapping between those two every two weeks until March 20th when we move over to Vero Beach.

While I've been busy, my motivation for writing has been lacking. So, where did it go? It's been preoccupied with a new project. Tomorrow I'll redirect myself and get back to my editing my book. Oh, and catching up my various blogs.

So what has been my preoccupation? We're planning a fun vacation in South America...for a MONTH. Where? In Ecuador, home to the Galapagos Islands. Yup, Stu definitely wants to scuba there. Andes Mountains, Amazonian type rain forests and more. Oh my!

The A to Z - 26 Days of US

It's hard to come up with interesting posts on a regular basis when you are sitting in one spot for weeks on end. We will be here in Tennessee until the end of August - that's three months of not traveling or sightseeing. We will, hopefully, be working on our land but we have a separate blog for that: Fire Lily Base Camp.

So, I've hit upon a thought of how to hopefully not bore you to death over at least the next month. I've seen something similar on other blogs and hope I can translate it to this one. In fact, some of you may have following my flash fiction stories for the April A to Z Blog Challenge (done on My Write Spot blog).

It will be the 26 days of us (not the U.S.) I'm going to travel through the alphabet from A to Z and hopefully find a photo and write something about that letter as it pertains to our RV travels in the past. Yes, I'm already panicked about Q, X and Z. Hopefully something will come to mind.

I won't post daily, giving me spots to pass along updates about our daily toil and trouble, probably every other day or so. I hope you enjoy this!

Okay, now for seven random things - you're stuck with ones about me since Stu isn't writing today. ;-)

1. I love greens - spinach, turnip greens, mustard greens, brussel sprouts. Even as a kid! Also, green olives, even as a kid. I loved to drink the green olive juice, too.
2. I was painfully shy until my 30's when finally the corporate world helped me deal with new people. I still get on "people overload" at times and need a little time off.
3. Most of my life I have disliked the color orange. Now I like it, go figure...LOL!
4. I never had a nickname growing up. I acquired my nickname when I started riding a motorcycle. Long story...another day. 
5. I've never been athletic, not as a kid and not as an adult. I was the one always picked last.
6. Most of my life I've only had one close friend at a time. Lots of acquaintances, not a lot of friends. Blame it on the shyness?
7. I hate formal night on cruises. I'm there to relax and getting dressed up for me is NOT relaxing. LOL!

Writing Competition

As I've mentioned before, I doing some fiction writing. While I eventually hope to make it to a completed novel, I'm enjoying working on my creativity by dabbling in flash fiction.

Flash Fiction:
In brief, flash fiction is a short form of storytelling. Defining it by the number of words or sentences or even pages required to tell a story, however, is impossible, for it differs from writer to writer, editor to editor. Some purists insist that it is a complete story told in less than 75 words; others claim 100 should be the maximum. For less-rigid flashers, anything under 1,000 words can be considered flash-worthy. And there are even a few who stretch their limits to 1,500 words.

Though the form is by definition extremely short, it is not a medium that tolerates fragemented storytelling. The challenge of flash fiction is to tell a complete story in which every word is absolutely essential, to peel away the frills and lace until you're left with nothing but the hard, clean-scraped core of a story.

Do not make the mistake of assuming that such bare-bones writing is less than elegant or beautiful. Sometimes beauty, or even inspiration, can be found in the simplest of things.

Neighbors Come and Neighbors Go

It's hard to believe a week has passed since Phil and Tracey May pulled in next door to us. They've been busy and so have we but we finally got together for a couple hours of chatting. Tracey's mom and dad are visiting from England. That said, Phil and Tracey's dad had to head off to the hardware store for supplies. So, we had a nice chat with Tracey, her daughter Ally and her mom. They pulled out early this morning, headed to Tampa for the RV Show.

So the spot next to us was empty once again. Late tonight a LONG motorhome pulled in and parked. I swear, it must be 45' long. I don't think they are staying long. They didn't straighten out in the site and they didn't hook up sewer. Either that or they will do that in the morning. LOL!

We meet so many wonderful folks as we travel. Some are blog followers, some are from forums and others new friends. It's a great life and we continue to grow our circle of friends. Similar hobbies draw us closer to some than others. Similar lifestyles do the same. But sometimes you seem to have nothing in common and still hit it off. That's life! Open up your door and your heart...you never know who might be waiting!

Tomorrow we plan to head to the Webster Flea Market. Last year we got some great prices on old license plates for our collection (for Stu's pole barn) and an old fire extinguisher. We're not looking for anything tomorrow, just browsing and getting in some walking (Sadie, too).

Wednesday we might head over to the Tampa RV Show, nothing firm in our plans. Friday we head to the east coast of FL to visit family while Sadie plays at doggy camp.

My writing is proceeding pretty well. I started a blog for anyone interested and I posted a Flash Fiction article. For those who don't know what it is (I didn't): "Flash is a short-short story characterized by brevity and intensity of the language. Flash has a clear plot. The length of a flash story is commonly under 500 words, never more than 1000."

I currently have two works in progress [WIP]. The first is a romance set in northwestern MT, tentatively title, "A Montana Chance". The other will be a character-driven mystery based in north central PA and tentatively titled, "Not a Whisper". The romance will grow into a trilogy and the mystery into a series of 3-4 books.

Okay, enough babbling for tonight!

So what's up with you?

Not much new here...each day we seem to do a few chores and still manage to feel lazy. LOL! Our new front and rear steps are in; some new propane leaks are fixed; all the new accessories are put on Stu's motorcycle; a new seat was bought and mounted on Stu's bicycle; shopping done twice at Sam's Club, Wal-Mart and Tractor Supply; etc, etc, etc...same old, same old.

Sadie is fine, got her shots updated and continues to terrorize our ever-revolving neighbors. They either love her or are terrified of her...LOL! She goes back to doggy camp on the 13th while we take the motorcycles to the east coast of FL to visit family over the weekend.

I continue to pick up things on eBay and Etsy for the future cabin. One item caught my eye and I finally gave in and bought it (Etsy). It arrived this week and I absolutely love it! The detail is amazing.

We are really enjoying our new Keurig Coffee Maker that we got at Christmas. We joined the Green Mountain Coffee Club and have been trying out different flavors. We both like dark roast, bold coffees and they offer a wide selection. It's also nice to have different flavors to try...like their sampler packs. Plus we can finally have decent decaf coffee at night. That said, the downside is discovering we are both drinking more coffee and said coffee is definitely more expensive. LOL!

Stu has pretty much completed his scuba dive equipment acquisitions. Some local, some eBay and some from online stores. He has to get some of it checked out, serviced and brought up to date. He still wants to go on a dive this month before our cruise next month.

Thanks to a couple of friends successfully publishing fiction ebooks, I finally decided to try my hand at it again. I've been writing for over fifteen years but 99% was non-fiction. I did get a short story published in a magazine but other than that, my fiction work sat and collected dust.

Well, I wiped the dust off a romance novel that I had outlined over ten years ago. I've updated and reworked it and am finally getting serious about writing again. I created a Facebook page, a Twitter account and a website. I'm in the middle of writing the second chapter of a romance novel tentatively named, "A Montana Chance". I also am playing around with a character driven mystery that will be based in north central Pennsylvania.

I will continue to blog but following the trend of the last month, not daily. I will try to blog at least weekly and maybe twice a week, depending on what is new. We will be here at Bee's RV Resort in Clermont, FL until the end of Feb. That means lots of down time...lots of chores...lots of motorcycle riding. LOL!

I hope everyone is doing well....I still read blogs but not as many or as often and I rarely take time to comment. Oops.... ;-)

New address.....

...for our blog. Over the weekend I will be moving our blog to our own domain, www.2takinga5th.com but I'm not sure when it will be effective or if you will have to change the blog link that you are currently following.

Soooooo, if you try http://2takinga5th.blogspot.com and it comes up Not Found, then go directly to http://www.2takinga5th.com.

That said, I am pretty sure that BOTH links will take you directly to our blog once it's all said and done. Time will tell, takes up to 48 hours for new domain registrations to take effect on servers world-wide so no testing till then.

Now that I have everyone completely confused (including me), hope you're having a wonderful day. Thanksgiving is less than a week away...I hope your plans include family and/or friends.

EDIT: For those interested in the process, I registered a new domain at godaddy.com and parked it there. Then I used their tool to do the prep work for the blog transfer. It was about 12 hours before the tool recognized the new domain. Once I can see the parked domain page by entering my domain name, then I will do the transfer at Blogger.

Spam, knees and more....

There were a lot of comments and questions about Stu's knee surgery so thought I'd just post the answers and clarifications here rather than in the comments.

First of all...yes, I know our blog was hacked. Well, not really hacked but they spammers took advantage of a boo-boo made by me. I'll clarify to help others not make the same mistake.

We use Google Calendar to co-ordinate our schedule, it updates our phones and keeps us in synch. When I enter an event that Stu needs to attend, I invite him through Google Calendar and it sends him an email. Normally I enter his name and chose him from the list. For some reason I started entering his email address, saw his name pop up and clicked. Well, long story short (or not), it was the email address for our blog (enabled so we can email blog updates when we are sans computer). The appointment goobledy-gook was then published on our blog and for whatever reason, the email address it was sent to also showed. Oops...

Within 30 minutes I had deleted the bad blog posts but it was already too late. That meant the spam-bots quickly picked it up the email address. That is how the next three spam blogs got posted. As soon as I realized what had happened, I disabled the email access in Blogger and then enabled it with a new address. The downside is anyone using an RSS feed or email, received notification of the "new" blogs and either saw the garbage if they got there before I did or saw nothing it after me. Sorry everyone!


Okay...on to the knees. As most of you know, Stu is a retired firefighter and his bad knees are a result of that career choice as well as lots of youthful exuberance in his younger years (like sneaking out of the house as a teen by jumping out of a second story bedroom window). He's already had one knee scoped and has had multiple cortisone shots as well as the newer injections like Orth-visc and Sync-visc (sorry for mispellings).

This year he visited his GP, then his orthopedic surgeon who referred him to the specialist that does knee replacements. The consensus was, his knees are both bad and aren't going to get any better. He's taking Celebrex for daily relief but that can't go on long term.

His surgeon does not normally do both knees at once but asked him several questions and determined that he was definitely a candidate. He is now undergoing PT sessions and will continue the exercises they give him from now through till the surgery. They have found they get better results doing PT before the surgery to strengthen the muscles.

So we will be back in Maryland in mid-March for all the pre-appointments (physical, labs, dental). We will rent a car for a month (or longer if needed) so I can drive (even if I learned to drive the Freightliner well enough to be comfortable in heavy traffic, it would be next to impossible for Stu to get in and out of it).

We have read a couple of blogs from others recovering from knee surgery combined with living in an RV and appreciate the referrals to more. Being prepared is a good thing!

Firefox and Blogger Commenting

Okay...tried ONE MORE thing today....LOL! If you are using Firefox and can't comment on a blog, try installing the IE Tab add-on. Then when you read a blog you want to comment on try these steps:

1. Right-click the tab for the blog you are reading and chose Switch Rendering Engine
2. The blog will reload as though it were being read in IE. 
3. Enter your comment.
4. Select any type of comment profile post except Google. I used Name/URL.
5. Click PREVIEW (this is necessary if there is word captcha on the comment page).
6. Click POST COMMENT.

Hope this helps us all comment on our favorite blogs. That said, someone said to try Chrome. I did. It works. But I still prefer Firefox...it's set up for me and I know my way around. LOL!

Here are some recommendations from Google on getting to your dashboard page if you are still having problems.

• Make sure you are running the latest version of your browser, if not, upgraded it.
• Make sure you REALLY have cleared both your COOKIES and CACHE
• Once Cleared shut down the browser
• Then Open it again and CHeck that the Cookies and Cache are indeed Empty. This is very important. The problem seems to be with corrupt cookies and cache files
• If that is OK try going to www.blogger.com . Don't login yet, press CTRL-F5 and then try logging in again
• If that still does not work try logging into Gmail first and then go to www.blogger.com and try again
• If that does not work try going to this address http://www2.blogger.com/home
• If that does not work try going to draft.blogger.com
• If all those fail, try installing another browser to see if that works eg Firefox, Chrome, Opera etc

Funny thing, I just tested this process from Firefox and it, too, worked!

1. Right-click the tab for the just opened Blogger.com and chose Switch Rendering Engine
2. The blog will reload as though it were being read in IE.
3. Enter your login information and you should be good to go!

Here's hoping they get this fixed but for now, the IE Tab add-on seems to be a good workaround. If you want to bypass these steps once you know it works, you can go to TOOLS/ADD-ONS/IE TAB and enter the URL for Blogger. It will then always open with the fake IE view. I decided to do just that and also added http://*.blogspot.com so that all my friends blogs will open and I can comment.

Quiet couple of days.....

You've already noticed that the latest blogs have all been generic stuff...not much about us. There's a reason for that...not much to report. LOL!

On Tuesday Stu headed out in the truck to Virginia where we had stored the BRAT Rack at friends. We will need the rack to carry our motorcycle cargo trailer that we are picking up in Louisiana in a couple of weeks.

He thought he'd be back today but decided to stay an extra day to visit family in Maryland. He should be home tomorrow night.

Me, I've just been doing the usual household chores, catching up on reading, running errands on the motorcycle and working on convincing Miss Sadie that Stu isn't the only alpha dog in the house...and she is NOT the other one. LOL!

We had some weather move in last night around 3 am, again around 8-9 am and the final round around 5 pm. Mostly heavy rain, some wind (lots of leaves on the ground) and this afternoon a little hail. Believe me, nothing serious compared to those in the Midwest...my heart goes out to them!

The biggest news seems to be the Blogger issues....several folks have said they can post comments if they are in a pop-up and not embedded in the blog. I just changed all my blogs to use the pop-up (which I detest but who am I to say...LOL!). Hopefully folks can now comment...at least the ones that couldn't before.

I can post using the Blogger in Draft as well using email (a good backup to have set up). Can't comment, it wants me to login, I do and I get the login page back. Same things happen if I go to Blogger.com. Sigh...

June 3rd we head to Fontana Village in NC for 5 days. While there we will use our seasons passes for my first visit to Dollywood, do some riding in the Smokies and maybe even get in our first whitewater rafting trip. Time will tell...lots to see and do in five short days.

On June 8th we load up the motorcycles, pick up Sadie from doggy camp and we head to Covington, LA to meet up with 50-60 or our closest motorcycle friends (including two couples from Australia). Should be a blast!

We plan to camp while there and we'll also be picking up our new motorcycle pull-behind trailer, BRAT II. If Sadie does with with our host's dog, we'll take one day before coming home and ride in to New Orleans. Then we'll camp on the way back home....sort of a shake-down trip for New England travel this July.

EDIT 2: Can't post a comment to my own blog in addition to everyone else's. Clearing cache, dumping cookies, refreshing...nothing has helped. Sigh....
