#2Doods A to Z: COOPER

COOPER

We had decided we wanted a Doodle, preferably a Goldendoodle, after meeting several around campgrounds. While we started looking at breeders close to our area, we also started searching and following various rescue groups. We didn't want an older dog, too heartbreaking.

We eventually found a breeder in Crossville, TN and contacted her. After much discussion, we put down a deposit with the pup to be picked up when we arrived back in TN in early July. When we got there, we had them pull out all the boys, deciding against a female.

After observing the puppies and interacting with them, we made a decision that shocked us both. We chose the somewhat shy and very scruffy-haired little black boy. We've never regretted that decision.

The breeder called him "Mighty-Mini" and thought he would top out at 35-40 pounds. So he became our Mini-Cooper. While we hoped he would maintain his black coloring, there was no guarantee. His mother was a Standard Poodle and his father was a Goldendoodle. This is a good thing, making him 3/4 Poodle and non-shedding.

He will be a year old on April 6th and is well over fifty pounds at last weigh-in. And, we found out Standard Poodles continue to grow until two years old! We should have know - he has always had HUGE paws, we call them bear paws. LOL!

..and yes, that is the same yellow duck as in the upper photo!

Doodle on!

    1. For whatever reason, neither pup is overly anxious to get up on the furniture!

  7. We said goodbye to our saint dog aka Bob the golden retriever two years ago and we still miss him. I’m intrigued by the golden doodle love the idea of no shedding. Do they have the skin problems that Golden’s do?

    1. With the Goldendoodles, you are never quite sure. The F1b (one Poodle parent and one Goldendoodle parent) is the best shot at not shedding. That's what Cooper is and while he needs more brushing and grooming, he doesn't shed. He also has had no skin issues, again only 1/4 Golden Retriever.

That said, they are prone to ear infections because of the long ears and a lot of hair. Takes extra grooming and care - Cooper just had his one year visit and he has a yeast infection in both ears. He seems to be more prone, having had his first infection when we got him.

  8. Watching them grow up is the most fun. But I am a real fan of the calm adult years.

    1. We are really hoping they settle down a little by next November when we head to the campgrounds for the winter!! We plan to do a couple short, local outings to get them more used to it.

  10. Adorable. I have a mutt and a lab. My sister has a labradoodle that I'm just in love with. Her dog is like a human. We're considering a new dog as one of ours is getting up in age and I can't decide between a labradoodle and a Goldenoodle.. I'm sure I spelled them wrong. I love all dogs. I'll be back to read more about your sweet dogs.

    1. I did a lot of reading - just Google "trait differences between labradoodle and goldendoodle". Lots of pages to help determine the best fit for you. I look forward to hearing about your decision!
