Post Cruise Update - Part II - Mexican Riviera

Tuesday, December 20, 2016

We headed out bright and early for the drive from Palm Springs to the port in Los Angeles. Traffic was heavy so a projected two hour drive took over three and a half hours! Nice to have wonderful friends like Bill & Dotty to take care of us.

Boarding was a breeze since we are now Platinum on Carnival. We whizzed through the priority line and were quickly in our room. Yes, a balcony. I'm spoiled. Actually, I get on people overload and love having an outdoor space just for me (and Stu).

Our first week was visiting the Mexican Riviera with an overnight stop (a first) in Puerto Vallerta and then on to Cabo San Lucas. While I hadn't been to Puerto Vallerta, I've visited enough in Mexico to not bother getting off. Of course, we honeymooned in Cabo. ;) But Stu had dives in both places. He preferred Cabo but enjoyed both. Heck, any dive is a good dive, he says.

He didn't take any land photos and I only took a few from the ship at both ports, but here are some stills taken from his GoPro video shot in Puerto Vallerta as well as a few I took from the ship. To see all the photos we took at both ports, click Puerto Vallerta and Cabo San Lucas.

These are all from Puerto Vallerta:

Here are a couple from Cabo San Lucas which was a tender port (meaning to get to shore, you would board a smaller boat):

Ciao for now!

Getting ready to hit the road....

Monday, October 31, 2016

It seems like we have gone non-stop lately, and actually, we have been. We made a quick trip to NJ to visit a childhood friend of Stu's, Tonia. Their parents were friends and the four kids stayed friends for years. But as it does, life intervened and they hadn't seen each other in well over 20 years. Since she was a four hour drive away, we popped up there and spent two fun days. I know this won't be the last time we will get together - life is too short!

Here is a quick photo I snapped on the drive back...

We did manage to see a couple more movies since our last post. First was Deep Water Horizon - excellent movie based on real facts. We really enjoyed the 'edge of your seat' action! Next was The Accountant - oh my!! The trailers were good but the movie was amazing (at least to us). We loved that they left it open for a sequel. The last was the new Jack Reacher movie. While we aren't huge Tom Cruise fans, we had heard the movie was pretty good. Well, it was. While Cruise is aging, so is his character; getting a bit fleshy and a little slower made for more realism. But the best part was the co-star, one kick butt female character who added a lot to the movie.

We also had one last night with Stu's daughters and family. Melissa had won a basket of crabs (already cooked). Toss in some burgers and hot dogs for those of us who don't eat them, some chips (Old Bay chips for the Maryland-ites) and potato salad/macaroni salad, and no one went hungry! Here are a few pics....

Last time I mentioned our current health status:
  • Three vision done, one to go
  • Two dental done
  • Two GP done
  • One hearing done
  • One mammogram done
  • One aorta ultrasound done
  • One colonoscopy scheduled
  • Two skin screening by dermatologist
The skin screenings were done, Stu ended up with three biopsies (still waiting on results) and I had several spot frozen. Had a nice scab on the end of my nose, it gets frozen every year thanks to many years of Florida living.

Stu got new hearing aids (thanks to Workmen's Comp) and he loves them. Much better than the old pair (which were failing frequently), and he can tune them with his iPhone. He also got his new driving glasses and sunglasses. He was amazed at how much more he was seeing. Mammogram, aorta screening and colonoscopy were all fine. Phew!

The only new thing is I will be getting cataract surgery next spring when we return to the area in May. We are opting for spring visits now for several reasons. More motorcycle riding weather here and enjoying the fall in Tennessee more. I will be getting both eyes done and can't wait. It's gotten really hard for me to drive and even the computer and reading is difficult. Sucks to grow old but it's still better than the alternative.

On our many trips across the Bay Bridge into the Annapolis area, we saw watched as several ships crossed under the bridge. Such a fun view, going over the bridge and seeing them cross under us.

Now we are packing up and heading south in the morning. If all goes well, we will spend two overnights before arriving on our lot at Bee's RV Resort in Clermont. We then have less than two weeks before we fly to California for our cruises. We get to spend a couple of days with our friends (and Stu's former partner), Dottie and Bill, before cruise number one - 7 day Mexican Riviera. When we return, we stay on the ship (in the same cabin) and head out for our 15 day Hawaiian cruise. So excited! Stu will be diving, I will be sightseeing and we both will be taking a helicopter tour over one island.

So we will try to post at least once before we leave but after that, it may be a while before you hear from us. Don't worry...we'll be having fun!

Ciao for now!

Out to sea - again!

Sunday, May 22, 2016

It's time - we're heading out to sea again. We are doing a back-to-back on the Carnival Conquest out of Ft. Lauderdale. Once again, we have been to all these ports multiple times. Stu will scuba dive and I will write (and read, my backlog is growing).

There won't be many photos, we've taken so many in the past. LOL! Here are some SmugMug album links for those who want pictures.

Our November cruise
Our January & March cruises

Some people ask why we like to cruise. That's easy! We don't have to do ANYTHING unless we want to. No cooking, no cleaning, no bed making, food 24/7, shopping for fun things, good music and comedy entertainment, foreign lands (we loved practicing our minimal Spanish where it's used) and, of course, sun - beach - water!

It's our vacation. People tell us we live on vacation and as retirees, that's sort of true. But we still have all the day to day things that plague everyone. Cooking, cleaning, shopping, maintenance & repairs, doctors - all that STUFF. This is our time to lay back and relax, and we love it.

Normally we aren't in Florida this late in the year. It's getting a bit warm for us, but not unbearable so far. We originally had one cruise booked and didn't want to cancel it since it put us in the Platinum loyalty class for our Hawaii cruise. Well, Stu decided we needed to be Platinum for my birthday cruise out of Baltimore in September. So now we're doing two, a 6 day followed by a 7 day. Fun!

May 22nd: 6 Night Exotic Eastern Caribbean
Fort Lauderdale  Half Moon Cay    Amber Cove  Grand Turk    Fort Lauderdale
May 28th: 7 Night Western Caribbean

Ciao for now!

Vacations and Vermont

Sunday, August 12, 2012

"Why are you going on vacation? You don't need a vacation? Your life is a vacation?" If you're an RVer, you've heard this before.

The truth is, while we have a wonderful life that enables us to travel and see the country, daily life always intervenes. Repairs and maintenance, health and other medical issues, family times - both the good and the bad.

So, we like to plan at least one vacation a year, sometimes we manage to eke out two. Here are some of our favorites.

Cruisin' the night away....

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

Well, it's finally arrived...our winter cruise time is here. Just wanted to let everyone know that I will be off-line until Feb 11th. The next three days we'll be in Orlando at Stu's annual retired firefighter reunion. On Saturday we head off for a seven day Western Caribbean cruise with several retired firefighter friends.

South of the border with friends....

Sunday, January 24, 2010

We woke to a perfect morning - crisp, clear and sunny. At 10:00 we headed out to Los Algodones, Mexico with our friends Dave & Renee and Gar & Jan. We all are Harley folks although not everyone is riding right now. Since we are all full-timers as well, there was always something to talk about.

We rode with Dave & Renee in their Jeep and Gar & Jan followed in their convertible. We are all staying on the east side of Yuma and the border into Los Algodones is on the west. Traffic was light and we zipped along, quickly arriving at our destination.

The parking lot was all but empty...not sure if this is a sign of the times or just a normal Sunday. We walked across together and as usual, Stu managed to make just the perfect pose for us...LOL! I couldn't resist take a shot of this "bull" on the back of a pickup truck.

From there we split up to roam, sightsee and run various errands. Jan & Gar needed to get meds, Renee & Dave were looking for salsa dishes and we were just looking. We planned to meet back in 90 minutes for some lunch.

Lunch was at El Parisio where we all had drinks (ranging from local beers to the requisite Marguerita). Good food, table in the sun, clean restrooms, and great conversation. I think we all enjoyed the day...oh, and everyone accomplished what they had set out for. (Jan & Gar are in the first photo, Renee & Dave in the second)

Here are some local shots I took...the rest are in the SmugMug album.

I had been in Algodones two years ago....a little has changed. Less jewelry, more Harley things, plastic resin fake stained glass is everywhere, less panhandlers, more aggressive vendors. There is little that is truly made by hand, the painted mailboxes (and other items) is a nice rarity. We saw several things we'd have picked up if we were building our cabin in the near future. Not now...only small things (like we picked up at the Arizona Market Place yesterday...found three old license plates that will go up in our eventual pole barn.)

We'll go back...we both liked it a little more than Progresso. Much less police presence...we saw a couple cars and two nice officers just as we entered. They wished up a good morning and smiled...very different from Progresso. LOL!

Another sunny day in Yuma

Saturday, January 23, 2010

Two days in a row...lots of sun, a little wind and comfortable temps. We headed out to the Arizona Market Place once again, where we would meet up with friends Gar & Jan, originally from Wyoming. I met Jan in 2005 on my motorcycle trips, I had known her several years from an online lady rider forum. The next time I bumped into her was at the Escapade in Gillette.

We spent a couple of hours chatting, grabbed some lunch at the food court and made plans to go to Los Algodones tomorrow. Our friends Dave & Renee are going to join us...should be fun! You can read about my first visit into Los Algodones in my old blog.

The market was busier than yesterday and the entertainment was wonderful! Here are a couple of pics I snagged on the iPhone.

And here are a couple of our rig in the lot we rented...the sun is setting. And a couple more of the local scenery as we head out of the development.

I expect to be beat by the time we get home tomorrow so don't expect another blog till Monday some time. LOL!

Oh, another side note to all the folks we missed in Q. We will be arriving back late Thursday afternoon, will get our solar installed in Friday and will head to San Diego on Sunday. We plan to visit the classic car show on Friday (maybe) and Saturday. Anyone interested in lunch or dinner....email us!!

Phew! All the photos uploaded....

Tuesday, December 15, 2009

Okay, got all the photos from our cruise uploaded to SmugMug and will hopefully work on the blog text tomorrow. Been a busy couple of days since we got back and the next week is still busy.

We took a wonderful 100 mile ride to nowhere on Sunday, Monday we went to the Webster Flea Market on top of a 100 mile ride and seeing "Blind Side" at the movies. Stu's birthday is Thursday and we are going to Epcot. After that we will visit family for a long weekend and next thing you know it's Christmas!!

We plan to hit the road shortly after Christmas, headed to New Orleans for our first major stop. We want to see the rest of the D-Day Museum. Then we continue on to Quartzsite, AZ for the big RV event (gotta do it at least once - I have but Stu hasn't). That puts us out to the middle of January...LOL!

If you want to preview the photos without any text, check it out here:

Honeymoon in Los Cabos, Mexico

Sunday, May 3, 2009

I don't quite know where to begin...talk about a week crammed packed full of fun, adventure and yes, even some relaxation. Here is a quick synopsis of the week and a few photos to pique your interest (all the photos are uploaded to SmugMug but are not necessarily in order...a frustration with SmugMug...sigh...).

We arrived early Wednesday morning (interesting how that happened since we left VERY early Wednesday morning....while Cabo is in Mountain Time Zone, they don't participate in Daylight Saving Time, thus they are, for all intents & purposes, actually in Pacific Time Zone...got that? LOL!)

We got registered but our rooms wouldn't be ready until after 1pm. We opted to head down to the poolside snack bar and grab a bite to eat as well as something to drink. Our friends (and fellow honeymooners), Duane & Kathi, were along with us. Duane is a died in the wool Budweiser drinker. Not even Bud Light passes his lips intentionally. Remember, we are in Mexico...the resort has two brands of beer - Sol & Tecate. [FEMSA Cerveza's beer portfolio contains 20 different beer brands and 1 flavored alcoholic beverages brand. Our main brands are Sol, Tecate, Carta Blanca, Superior, Indio, Tecate Light, Dos Equis Lager, Dos Equis Ambar, Bohemia, and Noche Buena. Tecate and Sol are the first and second fastest-growing established brands in Mexico. In the United States, our largest export market, Tecate and Dos Equis are our principal brands. FEMSA Cerveza's Brazil beer portfolio contains 14 different beer brands, our main brands are Kaiser and Sol.]

So after trying a Sol, then a Tecate, Duane knew he was going to have to get some "real" beer. While we met with our customer service representative to get our final check-in done, he badgered him (as he had the earlier help that did the initial registration) about getting him some Budweiser. (more on this later).

We next headed to sign up for some activities. The boys were most interesting in deep sea fishing and dune buggies. We found outings in our price range and got set up for the dune buggies on Friday and the fishing on Sunday. Monday was the member outing to the famous Los Cabos arch and snorkeling. We decided that Saturday would be our in town shopping day (had to stop at the local Harley shop - we even ate at the Harley restaurant and enjoyed several beers as we overlooked the marina) and the other days would be relaxation days. Here are some shopping & relaxation pics!

The resort was a bit smaller than the one in Cancun but every bit as nice. We always have a balcony & ocean view (sometimes more ocean than others, LOL) as well as nice cushy terry/velour robes and free scuff slippers. The maids have fun setting up cute little animal displays but the best of the week was the one surrounded by rose petals.

In addition there was entertainment of some sort every night with several special nights just for members. We managed to attend two out of three....the first was the Tiki Night on the beach. Besides silly games, good food, lots of drinks, there was amazing entertainment. We even convinced Stu & Duane to get up for one of the games...turned out it was a tequila drinking contest where each contestant had to give out a Mariachi yell after wards....hysterical (especially watching Duane chug his first ever tequila).

The other night we attended was the Caribbean Night held in the courtyard. While the entertainment was more South American, it was wonderful. Several countries were represented but the largest part of it was Brazil featuring one guy doing capoeira. Amazing!!

The dune buggy ride was a blast....not quite what I expected but a lot of fun. I can't really describe it other than the most fun I've ever had getting so dirty (one of the pics shows my new "red" tan on the front of my legs from the dust). If you have a chance to do this, give it a whirl. The folks at Sierra Buggies are wonderful. Here are two links (1, 2) to more info (pricing varies depending on how you book it). After the first half of the ride we hiked a ways, then clambered down a steep rocky hill to go swimming in a fresh water lagoon. Back up we climbed (my thigh muscles hurt for the next 3 days) and headed back to base on a different route (after on scenic overlook stop).

Naturally we had to be the ones with the defugalty...just after we headed out from the swimming stop, we realized that we didn't have our goggles. I at least had glasses but Stu was at the mercy of the dust...the dust that if we didn't see, we could be pretty sure we were lost. Midway the group stopped (see the photo with the fists stretched out) and we got it all taken care of.

The deep sea fishing (it's actually in the Sea of Cortez, not the ocean) was quite an experience. We were probably an hour or so later than we should have been for optimum fishing but getting up at 6am was early enough (we needed time to eat...LOL!). The boat was nice sized and the crew spoke decent English. Our first stop was to catch some squid for bait. Not the little ones that you eat, but good sized ones 4' or longer! Eeek!! From there we headed further out and over the next 4+ hours Duane & Stu managed to catch one nice sized Tuna, 2 Bonita, 2 Tiger Fish and one Mahi-Mahi. Not bad...we didn't bring any back since the resort won't cook them for you.

Our trip home was uneventful except for everyone here in the US worrying about us and the Swine Flu. We're all still doing well...no one kissed a pig so think we're in the clear. ;-)

Oh, I almost forgot the Duane beer story....on Thursday morning Duane and Kathi decided to walk on up to the Mega store (closest grocery store) which was at most 1/2 mile away. He found several qt. size bottles of his precious Bud so he grabbed those. On the way back, he spied the convenience store ACROSS THE STREET from the resort (the one that that the resort had mentioned to him when they called to confirm his reservation). Another stop netted 3 cans of Bud. By Saturday Duane was bragging (complaining) he had walked 15 miles each way, uphill, in the snow, for his beer. Then our customer service rep came through with two 6-packs ($20 'fee'). Duane was in beer heaven...but by the time we left he had walked 50 miles each way, uphill, in the snow....you get the idea. LOL!!

We'll be busy this next week, getting ready to head out to Colorado no later than Sunday (final departure date to be determined). Won't be blogging much, maybe a little more once we get on the road. We'll be taking the Jayco to Colorado where we'll pick up my Class C, then take them both down to Houston where we'll leave them with PPL Motorhomes on sale. Again...if anyone is interested before then, let us know!

Till next time - keep on rollin',
Donna & Stu
