72nd National Folk Festival, Butte MT

Tuesday, July 13, 2010

What a wonderful time we had at the 72nd National Folk Festival - the last year in Butte, MT...going to keep it brief. Great two days at the music festival...a little heat, a little rain, a little camaraderie, a little food, a little more beer and LOTS of great music!!

Here are the groups we saw with any links I could find for them. We enjoyed them all.

Benedicte Maurseth - Norwegian Hardanger Fiddle and Song

Bua - Irish (we'll be downloading some of their music)

Apsáalooke (Crow) Dancers and Nighthawk Singers

Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper - Bluegrass (another download, one of the most amazing fiddlers of our time...and he's blind)

Video One and Video Two (long)

Super Chikan and the Fighting Cocks - Mississippi Delta Blues (yup, more downloading to do)

World Percussion Traditions - 4 different countries & cultures represented

Baakari Wilder and Theo Hill - African American tap dance with jazz accompaniment on the electric piano

Tony Ballog and Roma Nota - Hungarian Gypsy

Whitetop Mountain Band - Appalachian old-time string band (the music was good but the dancing was amazing)

Dale Watson - Honky Tonk Country (his "Honky Tonk Wizard of Oz" is hysterical and a definite download, we will forever be singing "Tequila, whiskey and beer, oh my!))

Here are a few scattered photos - first, our friends Sharon & Don, then the rain, a few clouds, local scenery, hot day-cool grass and a sunset shot.

You can see the full album at SmugMug.

Today was chore day plus we saw "Despicable Me" (really cute & funny). Tomorrow we head back through Missoula and up to Polson area for the night (Wal-Mart). Then we move to West Glacier for several days. Supposed to be in the upper 70's and low 80's. Perfect!

Till next time - keep on rollin',
Donna and Stu

  1. We had the pleasure of see Michael Cleveland and Flamekeepers in early June right here in Iowa,, and was utterly amazed at his awesome fiddle playing. Then found later that night that he was blind, it really blew my mind that he was that GOOD. They are worth a trip of any distance to watch and listen too... we have their new CD and it is awesome also.

  2. Better head into Moose's in Kalispel for a beer and pizza, best pizza in the world as far as I am concerned. I have driven 6 hours down just for that, and oh yah a whirl across the Logan Pass in the MG.

  3. Looks like a great time. Another great folks festival is the Lyons Folks Festival in Lyons, CO (just outside of Estes Park). I think it's in mid-August, runs 3 days and has lots of great music. Something to consider if you're ever in the area during that time...
