Nature and New Orleans

Thursday, July 26, 2012

One of the wonderful side benefits of the RVing lifestyle is visiting spots where we can view nature in all it's glory. We've been to Yellowstone National Park several times, Glacier National Park, Zion National Park, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, Joshua Tree National Park, Grand Tetons National Park and the Grand Canyon to name just a few spots.

We've seen black bear, grizzly bear, osprey, eagles, deer, antelope, elk, mountain goats, big horn sheep, whales, sea lions, dolphins, gophers, prairie dogs, ground squirrel and yes, even the elusive moose. I'll let you search through the links above to see what you can spot. ;-)

Montana, Micro-Brews and Motorcycles

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

We like our micro-brews and try to visit as many as we can. We've been a bit lax lately but here are some of our past visits in various states:

Of course motorcycling is one of our biggest passions. When we got together, I had sold my last motorcycle and Stu had his first (since dirt bikes as a kid). I am on bike two and he is on bike three since then. I think these are our last....unless I move to a trike someday.

We've been on some amazing rides and been to some fun events since we met in 2008. Here are just a few samples.

Gadgets, Goodies and Glacier

Saturday, July 7, 2012

RVers like goodies...just look at the selection of "toys" at Camping World or any of the online RV stores. Special dishes, mats for cabinets, holders for shower items, special mini-"just about anything you could want".  Then there are the fun and funky lights to hang off our awnings, silly lawn ornaments that we love to display. Plus all the tools; you know the guys (and a few gals) just HAVE have to have tools.

One thing we all try to do is find items that can serve multiple purposes, a great way to conserve space in our tight quarters. We organize and re-organize. We use totes, collapsible bins, bags of all sizes and styles.

Of course we can't forget out gadgets be it a hand-held GPS for geo-caching, or the latest ebook reader from Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Kitchen gadgets get tested as well. We have the cutest little two-egg poacher for our microwave. It works great and we use it all the time. Then there are the silicone backing dishes, collapsible bowls and colanders and much more.

What are your favorite organization tips? Got a gadget that you'd love to let others know about?

No news....means having fun!!

We had an uneventful but beautiful drive from White Sulphur Springs, MT down to our boondocking spot in Moran, WY. Perfect weather and gorgeous scenery. We stopped for lunch overlooking the Snake River where we watched the rafters and kayakers go by. Life is good!

We found our boondocking spot, a place the locals call "Freebie Hill" and got set up in time to head out for a local drive followed by a stop for dinner at a little cafe we passed just down the road from us. The local drive ended up on an unpaved National Forest Service Road before looping us back to the main highway and back to our camp site.

The cafe was part of a little resort with cabins to rent as well as horse trail rides, fly fishing and snowmobile trips. The food was good and priced right, the service was excellent. We knew we'd be back.

Over the next five days we took multiple trips into the Grand Teton National Park and the town of Jackson, WY. We spent a full day in Yellowstone National Park as well. The weather continued to be perfect and we really hated to leave.

Oh, we did our random act of kindness while riding up Signal Mountain in the Grand Tetons. A long ride upwards, beautiful views, tons of wildflowers and then the long ride down. We pulled over so I could snap some wildflower photos and a young guy on roller blades pulled in, too. Seems he had nothing to do for two hours....LOL! He looked hot (it WAS hot but still in the mid-80's) and we offered him some water. We gave him the bottle, he thanked us and took on off up the hill!

We saw buffalo in the parks, elk (on the river right below our campsite), elk in the parks, buffalo on the outskirts of Jackson and moose on the outskirts of Jackson (a bull and later a mama moose with her baby). Toss ins lots of birds and our first marmot wandering in the thermal areas of Yellowstone.

Early Saturday morning (okay, so 9 am isn't early for the rest of the world but it is for us...LOL!) we headed east towards Casper, WY where we planned to spend the night. Originally we planned to Wally World it but temps in the 90's changed our minds and we booked one night at Ft. Casper Campground, a Passport America park.

While staying in Moran we had to deal with a lot of road construction...right in front of our access road. In the parks there was construction as well, including a long wait where they were building a new bridge.

But nothing compared to what we hit on US 26 heading towards Dubois, WY. Oh my...first time I've ever seen multiple pilot cars running both directions....and on a dirt road. So much dirt that it looked like they were re-engineering the highway for miles. One hill gave us pause...but we managed to not get stuck. LOL!

Dubois looked to be an interesting little town but unfortunately we didn't have time to stop and visit....maybe next time. The scenery just got prettier. After we entered the Wind River Indian Reservation we pulled over for lunch at a scenic photo stop. Oh my....was it ever!

Unfortunately the scenery soon passed into flatter lands, not many houses, nor cattle, nor horses...but we did see quite a few Pronghorn Antelope. LOL! We arrived at Sam's Club (next door to a Super Wally World) around 3 pm. We restocked our pantry, filled up Freddie with diesel at Flying J and then headed to the campground.

Wouldn't you know it....the road into the campground was....yup, you guessed it....under construction! LOL! We got settled into a nice long and wide 50 amp spot, fired up the bedroom A/C and I got started on laundry. Phew!

Tomorrow we have another 300 miles to Blackhawk, SD and once again, the temps are going to be HOT!!! Hope they can fix our main A/C unit quickly on Monday.

Till next time - keep on rollin',

Rolling along....

Monday, July 26, 2010

We spent a couple of extra days in White Sulphur Springs at our western home park, Conestoga Campground. Chores needed to be done...laundry, house cleaning, mending, washing the RV and truck to name a few.

We also took in a pizza and a movie at Stageline Pizza downtown. We saw Toy Story 3 and I was pleasantly surprised...it was much better than I anticipated. Written much towards adults, it was well written, very funny and delightfully poignant.

We finally hit the road yesterday, taking a leisurely drive through some gorgeous country. I REALLY could live in Montana....well, at least for June-September. LOL! We passed down the western side of Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. We parked for the night at a Super Wally World in Idaho Falls, ID. It was in the low 90's and the sun was HOT on the parking lot so we broke down and ran the air conditioner.

Today we head to Moran, WY area to try some boondocking. Not sure how long we will be there or if we will have phone or Internet access so figured I should do a quick update here. We plan to enjoy Jackson Hole, Grand Teton National Park and maybe some of Yellowstone.

Then we head to Blackhawk, SD where we have an appointment next Monday to get our main air conditioner fixed. We only have the one in our bedroom right now and I just KNOW it's going to be hot at Sturgis (where we plan to be for two weeks).

After Sturgis we head to Elkhart, IN for the Gypsy Journal Rally. Looking forward to connecting with friends there, especially Nick & Terry and hopefully Greg & Jan. Then it's on to MD for Sept/Oct where we will catch up on doctor appointments, see family and take two of our grandkids to Disney for 5 days.

Anyway, not sure when we will be blogging again...but you KNOW we'll be having fun!

Till next time - keep on rollin',

A little more of this and that.....

Thursday, July 22, 2010

A weather perfect day, we packed a lunch and headed out for a motorcycle ride through the countryside. What a great day! Mountains, rolling ranch land, rocks set into the hillsides, man-made lakes, twisting rivers and creeks, wildflowers everywhere, cows and horses (IN their pastures..LOL). Of course you have to toss in the road construction (3 miles of gravel), rain and wind.

In the middle of the road construction we stopped at the Bair Family Museum. The timing was perfect...restrooms, picnic tables and a free gift shop/visitor center that chronicled the family's history. After lunch the sky was looking dark so we passed on the tour of the house (which we heard had an admission fee of maybe $5). We'll visit that another time.

By the time we got back on the paved road, it was raining. Fortunately it wasn't hard and didn't last long. Before we knew it the sun was back out and we were enjoying the scenery once again.

On our last leg we caught sight of a cowboy and two helpers herding some cattle across the road. The fun part was that the cattle actually went UNDER the road. The cowboy then closed and locked the gate. Always enjoyable to watch them in action. We have been watching The Last American Cowboy on the Discovery channel. It features three ranches in Montana and how they approach cattle ranching...each in a different way. Very interesting show!

Tonight Stu washed our trailer...at least most of it. It's really needed it for a while. Tomorrow...another ride? We do plan to do a pizza and a movie tomorrow night.  We move out on Saturday, heading to Moran, WY where we plan to boondock for four or so days.

Till next time - keep on rollin',
