Gypsy Journal Rally....reporting in!

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

We are almost at the end of day....ummm, day.....errrr, our first couple of days here at the rally. (Can you tell the days have all run together? LOL!) It's been exhausting, exhilarating, and exciting.

We initially volunteered to work the parking crew. Early arrivals were on Sunday....I figured maybe 50-60% of early registrants would be doing early arrival. Nope! 98%....gulp! So here we have:
  1. A new fairground
  2. A new parking crew with the exception of a couple folks
  3. An already occupied fairground (Good Sam Rally due to depart by noon Sunday)
  4. And worse of all....a rainy day!
Can you say prescription for disaster? Fortunately we worked through the disaster part (the first hour of parking...). But we did get to stand and work in pouring rain...inches worth of rain....with thunder and lightning....and temps dropping to 47. At times I wondered when the hail was going to start.

Day two was much better, less rigs to park and we finally had a handle on how to move them around. This fairground isn't like the others that the rally has used...where you park everyone in a row, then another row, than another. Nope, this one has very scattered parking....in multiple spots....and power is just as scattered. I'd love to see an aerial photo of the fairground right now!

I also had the BEST seat in the house to see the jets and helicopters take off and land. You can see some of my iPhone pics at SmugMug.

After finishing parking duty on Monday, we had the Welcome to the Rally and vendor introductions followed by a great concert by David Bradley, a western singer and yodeler. We then went out for a great dinner with Nick & Terry as well as Greg and his wife, two other volunteers. It was midnight before we all got back to our rigs...LONG day!

Tuesday I was the volunteer room host (greeter, attendee badge police, hand-out passer) for: Personal Security Tips for RVers, The Perfect Alaska RV Adventure, and Geocaching 101. They were all sessions I wanted to attend and I enjoyed them all. Tuesday night we had more door prizes and once again, David Bradley performed.

Today I was the volunteer room host for: Getting the Most Out Of Your Digital Camera, Rving Alaska and Blogging for RVers. I also helped back up Nick at the blogging session...he normally doesn't do it but the original presenter wasn't able to make it.

Tonight is our pizza party (and I am starved!!!) followed by more door prizes (there are LOTS of them!!!) and entertainment by Michael Hargis. I heard him practicing and we are in for another treat!

No other photos...there hasn't been time. You can see some on Nick's blog though. We have had some other fun though....let's see, do I start with the fresh water tank leak? Or maybe the propane leak? LOL! We have also changed insurance carriers (by need, not choice...thanks to a discussion in the Escapees forum, we finally realized USAA did NOT cover us as full-timers. GULP!), got a Mary Kay fix, met a bunch of old friends (in time, not age), made a bunch of NEW friends and bought some upgrades for our Freightliner.

Best of all....we are having FUN!!! I still think this is the best RVer rally around and I can't wait till we can attend another one.

To any new blog followers, please be patient...I am behind and will catch up after the rally...promise!

Till next time - keep on rollin',
Donna & Stu

  1. Donna,
Thanks for the update on the rally. We are following along on your blog and hope to be able to attend the one in Indiana. We have never attended a rally before and have two to choose from in Indiana - Nick's Rally and the Escapade. We may not be able to attend both.
You all continue to have fun and learn a bunch.

    Hugs,
    Mike and Gerri (http://freedom2roll.blogspot.com)

  3. What insurance did you switch too? We also have USAA..but was aware that they don't do FT insurance...so will need to change when the time comes.

    Thanks Julie
