We paid our day fee to get into the park, $6.00, and they told us to keep our receipt. We continued in, passing the first campground sign and turning off on the second. Mistake!! Turns out the second campground was much smaller and there were no spots for a rig our size. But they told us there were plenty at the first campground.
So we circled around and made the turn at the first one that we had initially passed. We stopped at the entrance and picked up our registration envelope...no sign of activity at the camp host site across the way. We avoided the sites with hookups which were much pricier (but still cheaper than most commercial campgrounds) and found one that was 1) long enough for us, 2) had room to unload the bikes and 3) had our solar panels facing fairly well.
We spent three nights there...loving every minute of it. We took the bikes out sightseeing....can you say WOW!! We stopped at the visitor center, stopped at many roadside pull-outs, hiked back on trails to see more and just thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We never got tired of the red rocks - the beauty of the area. I can't wait to go back!! The hardest part is choosing what photos to show here...these are just a small sample!
The last morning we took a walk to the entrance of the campground where we could see petroglyphs. Some were up high, we climbed metals steps but you could see the rock steps that the earlier inhabitants had used.
From there we headed back to Yuma...spending an asphalt overnight in Vidal, CA before finally parking a the VFW BLM area (where we got our lovely desert pin-striping mentioned previously). We spent one night there so we could attend the huge local classic car show, Midnight at the Oasis before attending the Gypsy Journal Rally.
Till next time - keep on rollin',

PS. You can see all the photos in our SmugMug album.
That's a new one to us, Donna. Looked wonderful. We need to see more of Nevada, our younger daughter reminds us!
ReplyDeleteLooks like our kinda place & we've had it on our list for a couple years now. IF we can get away earlier this fall I would like to come down through that area. We did hear there was no Verizon signal there though:((
ReplyDeleteFantastic pictures! Looks like a beautiful spot!
ReplyDeleteWe used to spend our 2-week winter break at Overton Beach, which is just east of V of F. We'd go into the park often to explore and hike. Then due to low water levels in Lake Mead, the Park Service closed the RV park and mobile home park there. We now have to go south about an hour to Echo Bay. But I still love V of F. Beautiful red rocks!
