The joy of boondocking.....

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

We really enjoyed our time at Silent Valley Park even though we weren't able to use the motorcycles. Next time, we'll unload them first. Yes, we would definitely go back....the park is membership only though, so you need Coast to Coast or RPI to stay there.

We got everything ready to go and then took off on our morning walk. We had soda cans to drop in recycling and I wanted to see if there were any new books in the library (and leave a few I had read while staying there).

Stu unhooked the utilities and started the truck...well, he tried to start the truck. Once again we had a dead battery. Turns out they were almost four years old, plus they have been drained about 6 times in the last three years. We already planned a Sam's Club/Wal-Mart stop and figured we'd check out batteries as well.

After getting the truck started, we headed on down the mountain where we would head about 80 miles east to Joshua Tree National Park. We had already scoped out boondocking sites there. I added more shots of coming down the hill to our SmugMug album.

We stopped at Sam's Club and not only got the groceries we needed, we picked up a gravity lounger that I had been wanting. This one has a slide-out beverage holder tray! Sweet!! We also found the batteries we needed (yup, the Freightliner takes two commercial batteries) and got them installed FREE. Gotta love it!

We finished up our shopping at Wal-Mart and headed off the last 30 or so miles to our selected boondocking spot. The scenery got prettier and prettier...yellow was the color of the day. After driving and walking the dirt roads we found a spot out of the way and level. We settled in, found out that we have plenty of AT&T cell signal as well as both Sprint & Verizon aircards.

A gorgeous sunset ended the day and tomorrow we'll unload Big Red and ride around the park. The weather is supposed to be gorgeous. Unfortunately we have to leave on Thursday for the 200 mile drive to Kingman, AZ where Twister has a service appointment.

Till next time - keep on rollin',
Donna & Stu
