Today sucked.....

Monday, November 19, 2007

For a day that started out so nice, it went steadily downhill.

First sign that the day was going down the tubes was seeing two MAJOR one vehicle accidents. One was a semi, looked like the driver fell asleep...you could see where he drifted off the road and the rig was still there and it had obviously rolled at least once. The other was another large truck...couldn't tell what kind as it was upside down...could just see all the wheels (like a big dumptruck/cement truck size). I'm sure there were injuries in both of them.

Next was getting a bit off-track and wasting about 20 miles till I find my way back to where I should have been. Normally getting lost is no biggie but I knew that I was in for 10 hours of driving as it was...

But those were the minor downers.....trying not to cry now. At a rest stop BoBo got loose (slipped out the door before I had a firm grip on the leash) and got hit by a car. He had already stopped breathing by the time I got there....I then proceeded to throw up. I hope I never see something like that again. The lady driving was almost as hysterical as I was but it wasn't her fault. He had no fear of cars (I mentioned that to friends once) and he darted right in front of her. There was a truck driver who lived in the local area and he offered to take BoBo to his farm and bury him.

Not going to do any more pets....just not meant to be. Every time I think of him laying there, I start crying. Today sucked!

Till next time - keep on rollin',
Froggi/Donna

  1. Oh, Hon!...I am so sorry!...damn!....My heart is out to you....Traveling with pets can be very difficult...regardless of their age...or "attitude".
Warning for all others: Always attatch the leash before opening the door!

  2. Dear Donna,
I just wanted to say how terribly sorry I am about the loss of your dog. It is a horribly painful thing to go through.

Just from reading your blog, it's obvious you gave Bobo all the love and care a dog could want while he was here. The fact that you were literally sick when it happened says volumes about how much he meant to you.

Speaking as a fellow dog owner, there is just no way that you can be in control of everything every minute. I dropped one of my dogs' leashes just yesterday, and the same tragic thing could have happened, or could happen next time.

If it did, I would try to remember that my dogs (both rescued, as I seem to remember your Bobo was) have had good lives that they otherwise very likely wouldn't have enjoyed. Also, that there's no way of knowing what the alternate scenario would have been. There could have been illness or some other kind of unavoidable suffering.

As it was, Bobo surely couldn't have known what was about to happen, since dogs can't really think into the future, or know that something's about to happen because they've heard about it happening to somebody else.

All he could have known was that he was having one of the peak experiences of a dog's life - getting loose and running as fast as he could wherever he wanted to go! And the next moment he was in heaven, just as though he had run straight there. (Most people don't realize this, but there's even a couple of places in the Bible that talk about animals and heaven.)

And how noble of you to have had the grace and generosity, even in the midst of that kind of awful shock, to forgive the driver of the car. That may have saved her from being traumatized for the rest of her life.

I hope that you will be as easy on yourself as possible and give yourself every break you can while you're healing from this heartbreaking experience.

You are doing wonderful things with your life and are a great inspiration and example, and I know I'm one of many whose prayers and best wishes are with you.

    Sincerest sympathy,
    Joan

  3. Donna, I'm so sorry for your loss. I can only imagine your feelings at losing BoBo this way. Reading your account brought tears to my eyes as it brought back memories of my own loses of pets in the past.

Hang in there and don't let this get you down. Be safe in your travels.

  4. Donna,

I'm so sorry to hear about BoBo. Aminals are such great companions, and when something happens, it's just like loosing a family member.

    Hang in there.

  6. Donna, I too am sorry about your loss. Pets really do become a part of our families and loosing them is a hard thing. As others have said, you sure gave Bobo a good home and he knew he was loved. As to other pets in the future, don't rule it out completely as the time may come when it will work for you. Perhaps another little one will need rescuing and you can be the one to do it.

    Hugs,
    Dick

  10. Donna,
So sorry to hear about BoBo. Pets add so much to our lives. They give tirelessly. But they also bring restrictions into our lives since they depend on us totally.
I liked how Joan described what happened. Thinking about it from BoBo's perspective helps somewhat.
Keep looking forward. You are a brave woman on a wonderful journey.

  18. Donna,

I wasn't able to read your blog until this morning. I am truly in a state of shock and have tears in my eyes even as I write this. I am so very sorry about BoBo.

If it is any consolation, when my mother (who raised, and loved many poms and cockers) passed away earlier this year, I read and reread that piece, The Rainbow Bridge, many times and that helped me handle her passing.

    My Prays go with you,
    Scott

  19. Donna, I am so sorry for your loss. I personally know from first hand experience what you are going through.

As everyone has stated, a loss of a pet is the same as the loss of a family member. My 4 dogs travel with us and where we go they go.

Your in my thoughts and prayers and maybe in time you will think about getting another traveling companion.

  20. Oh mom, I'm sooo sorry!! I haven't checked my blogs for a couple of days. I will be trying to call you. We will be hugging our babies a little tighter for you tonight.

It was very brave and kind of you to take him into your hme and life in the first place. He had many happy loving times with you. Now he can keep dad company.

We all love you very much!!

  25. Oh babe I am SO SORRY you had to see that. As I read about BoBo I started to cry and Jake came to my side to console me. You might need to rethink the NO PETS commit.
