Hi Donna. I would be interested in some discussions with you.....about Canadians being in the USA more than "six months less a day" and mail forwarding while you are on the road. We retired two years ago and are also "roadies" but with some logistical issues that I'd like to chat about with someone who has been doing the same things.
So, feel free to comment here or contact me if you feel you can help and you want her email address. Thanks in advance!!
Till next time - keep on rollin',

Hey Donna,
ReplyDeleteSend this link to her. www.rvliving.net Peggy and John are Canadians who have been fulltiming for nearly 20 years, I believe. Peggy has written several books and sends a weekly newsletter. Their website is www.rvliving.net She should be able to answer any questions regarding traveling between Canada and the USA, since they winter here in the US. They have also dealt with several medical issues over the years, so have a lot of experience.

Peggi & John are a great reference but here's an OHIP link that might be of interest:

Every five years Canadians can apply for an extension to the time allowed out of Canada. This gives you 18 months out of county every 5 years. If you stay out more than 183 days then you lose your medical benifits but I believe it is possible to re-establish these benifits simply by living in Canada for 30 or 35 days and re-applying after this time has elapsed.
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who is a tav adviser and he tells me there are ramifications to do with income tax if we stay away too long as well. In this case you are "deemed" to have divested yourself of all Canadian assets. This may have unfortunate Capital Gains ramifications. Find out before you consider doing this!
