GPS - Love 'em, Hate 'em

I don't know if you have seen this Allstate commercial yet, but it had me laughing out loud and I just HAD to share it. Enjoy!!

So where has your GPS sent you or told you? We've been told to turn right off a bridge, turn off the interstate through a fence (no ramp), and on a new road to a Harley dealer rather than telling us to make a u-turn at the next available opportunity, she kept saying (with a very agitated voice), "Make a u-turn! Make a u-turn! Make a u-turn!". Had us laughing for hours....

Till next time - keep on rollin',

  1. Where I used to live in Fremont, IN, the GPS had people make a right turn instead of a left onto my street. The right turn takes you straight into a small lake. Gives a whole new meaning to "Go jump in the lake!" The GPS also had us go into downtown Bar Harbor with our coach and car in tow..Eldy kept saying, "This can't be right! This can't be right!" as we negotiated the downdown streets of Bar Harbor, ME trying to find our campground. Turns out there were two Bar Harbor streets with the same name (one E. and one W. ) and the idiot that programmed the GPS was at fault. That would be me, Sparky!

  2. PS. BTW, We made it through the streets in Bar Harbor July 4th weekend. It was CRAZY! I think that was the most stressful driving situation we've been in so far since last June!

  3. I would not travel without a GPS anymore, but I do not always listen to what it says. It sure has its funny moments. With the motorhome, I always plan a route first with Streets and Maps. If the GPS tries to lure me into a different route, it spends a lot of time babbling until I hit the mute button.

  4. We use Streets & Maps as our GPS in the motorhome and a Garman in the car... There have been some really hairy situations with both but they always get me where I am going... Clip was hilarious!!!

  5. The funniest and most aggravating is just over a mile from my house where he keeps trying to get me to take the next left .... and all the "next lefts" would take me to someone's house! For some reason, he can't seem to learn that there is no through way from the unpaved county road I'm on to the highway he thinks I should be on. I suppose I should forgive him, though .... after all his sexy Aussie voice should be an indicator that he really doesn't know much about New Mexico! After all, many in my own USA still can't understand that NM is part of the US; I guess I shouldn't expect the Aussie to understand! LOL!

In spite of that, I love my GPS, even when those occasional blips in technology arise. It has saved my sanity (not to mention my tushie!) many times!

  6. BTW, if I'm going through a large city that I am not familiar with or a long distance along, I always check the route via Mapquest ahead of time, just to be sure. I've been led astray or missed a turn, especially in cities, because of short distances between exits, etc.

  7. I have had that very same problem and have to laugh like crazy everytime "she" goes nuts. The Allstate commercial is a riot. Got to love mayhem.....

  8. I guess you have to remember that you are the pilot in command, and nothing will replace your judgement of the facts at hand. Your recalculation speed will always be much faster than Garmin Gertrude's! She's your servant and needs to be kept in her place, LOL!

  9. Mine is always "recalculating" because I usually only need it for the end of the trip to find a specific street. I line Lynilu's idea of having a guys voice, I think I will reprogram mine.

  10. I call our Tom Tom "Carleton" just to piss him off...He won't listen to ME...and aways wants to take us right through downtown traffic!!
I LOVE those Mayhem commercials..Have you seen the one where Mayhem is snow on the roof of a house...It's killer funny!!!

  11. The GPS and Google Maps both have a very hard time with Rocky Point. They both insist that we live up a road that doesn't exist on the ground, just on a county record somewhere. I turn OFF the voice, and just follow the maps most of the time, although I do love those freeway exit signs that pop up in big cities! That got me through ten westbound lanes of busy Toronto traffic one morning last September.

  12. Ours has taken us to many dead ends, and numerous fields. Also told us to turn where there was no road in sight. She always tells us to make a legal u-turn, and yes, she does get shitty about it... :)

  13. last summer, less than a mile from the RV park we were going to, our GPS took us to a dead end in the MH. since then, it's been in an overhead cabinet!

right now in AZ, we are using google maps on my blackberry occasionally.

    i love that mayhem guy!!!!

  14. I love when it thinks we're driving in a river or in the middle of a lake :)

  15. Just saw that commercial-too funny (and true). We use both GPS and google maps. In Indiana I decided to use the GPS and ended up on a narrow gravel road, thought my husband was going to have a stroke. Now when in doubt I usually go with my google instructions.

  16. Our GPS is usually fantastic. The only annoying thing that it does with some consistency is tell us to turn on streets that turning is forbidden between certain hours.

  17. My Garmin is at least 4 years old and I've never updated the software in it, so I expected a few problems on our trip to Tuscaloosa from the Tampa Bay area at Christmas. It did a remarkable job.

But I love Google maps on my Droid cell phone. It gets constant use, even locally, where I access it, then hit the mic icon and say "Starbucks". Their grand caramel frappacinos are addictive as hell!

  18. I think Stu can confirm that Jerry and I have had MANY a GPS episode! Once it told us to turn left while we were in the middle of crossing a bridge! Needless to say, we ignored her! LOL!

  20. We have had much the same issues with ours, we have a good laugh when she wants to send us on a road that doesn't exist.

A couple of the funnier times is when we put in a couple of Walmart addresses in, one took us to a cemetery and the other into the middle of nowhere. Guess someone got numbers mixed up!

  21. It is a great commercial. We got our first GPS in 2008 and have had it, sans updates, ever since. My wife adores it; I have a love/hate relationship. Twice it has tried to put us into the drink - Mississippi River and Bay St. Louis (I forgive the latter, the hurricane blew away the causeway). It has problems with really obscure locations in the woods and is no use trying to find ones way out of the maze of NFS roads in the Carolinas. All in all, it has been a real help negotiating most urban and suburban areas. Time to get a new one, though - the manufacturer no longer makes this one and hasn't updated the maps or database.
