On our way to Glacier National Park

Thursday, July 15, 2010

We left Butte around 10:30 or so and decided to put my money where my mouth said I should be...or something like that (see previous blog). As we hit I-90, I said to Donna "Let's take the Pintlar Scenic Route. We had plenty of time and the weather was clear.

Well, it was just as nice doing it with the rig. We even saw a Moose. Well I did anyway. He was filling his pie hole with water from a creek by the road. By the time I found a safe pull-off and Donna and hiked back to the spot, he was long gone. Better luck next time.

After completing the route, I checked the time, it added 30+/- minutes to our trip. Well worth it. As we hit I-90 back to Missoula Donna dozed off and I started reflecting on the National Folk Festival. Why were we drawn to and amazed by what we heard and saw? I think good music, I mean really good music enters your ears and does something unimaginable to your insides. It then comes out in many ways, a foot tap, a smile, a whoop, an "Oh Yeah" and sometimes you just gotta get up and start dancing. That's what happens at this festival. Folks just show there feeling by movement created by the music from inside their spirit and it just has to come out. A joy for me to see and feel. We will go again and again.

We got to Missoula and stopped for some pie and coffee and hit the road north to Polson on the shores of Flathead lake. Donna emailed our friends Renee and Dave to let them know we would be at the "Wally World" in town. They were still at Renee's daughters place not far from Polson. We called when we got parked and about an hour later we were on our way to Glacier Brewing, a local micro-brew.

We picked up a sampler. Some of the beers were good others so-so, no surprises there. In fact, two were not even beers! One was root beer and the other a Dr. Pepper wannabe. Both good but sweet. We did add to our growler collection and Donna snagged a pint glass for their stout that we really liked. We loved one t-shirt but since it was actually for a wine...never mind.

Okay, for those who still don't know what a growler is, here is a great article to read. There...now you know! Donna mentioned that maybe she'd take up beer making as a hobby when we put down roots...sounded good to me. Now we'll have growlers from all over the country to store the beer.

We relocated to Ricciardi's Italian Seafood Restaurant. Donna had lasagna and I had a seafood marinara plate. Both were very good. We darned near closed the place talking and laughing. Dave and Renee have become some of our cherished friends and we get together whenever our paths cross. Back at the rig we said our goodbyes and hugs etc.

The next morning we left at the ungodly early hour of 11:30 and rode a punishing 90 miles to West Glacier. We reserved a spot at the San-Suz-Ed Trailer Park and Campground. A laid-back place within a few miles from Glacier National Park. Tomorrow seems to be the perfect day to take the "Going to the Sun" road. Weather is clear, in the 80s with no rain. Traffic should be Mid week light. Early breakfast then riding through another chunk of "God's Country". I know, it's all God's Country, but this piece is damn scenic.

Here are some photos Donna snagged through our bug covered windshield. Pretty amazing scenery!

Still Rolling,
Stu and Donna

  1. That is not only God's country, we like to think of it as ours as well. We lived in Butte for nine years, visited Glacier park a number of times, did the Going to the Sn Highway and all that. For a few years we owned a time-share condo in Whitefish. Delightful! I visited the Flathead several times while I workled for Safeway in Montana. We arrived in Polson one day for a new store's grand opening, just as Mt. St. Helens blew her top. Were stuck in town three days, all driving prohibited!
