Day Eleven: Skagway, AK

Thursday, June 17, 2010

We've watched TV specials about Skagway and are looking forward to visiting. We arrive at 7 Am and depart at 8 PM. We have another full day, heading off to our excursion at 8:10 AM.
WHITE PASS TRAIN RIDE
Relax in a vintage railcar onboard the historical White Pass & Yukon Route railroad. Gaze in awe at the incredible scenery as your train ascends dramatic mountains and your guide shares colorful stories and the history of the gold rush. Against all odds, the iron trail was carved through some of the North's most rugged terrain in 1898.

KLONDIKE HIGHWAY DRIVE
From the depot in Fraser, British Columbia, board a motorcoach and travel the spectacular Klondike Highway to see the Tormented Valley and Pitchfork Falls. Hear the tales of hardship that earlier travelers endured in their quest to reach the interior. Breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, waterfalls and glaciers may be captured during photo stops.

LIARSVILLE CAMP & LUNCH
At the foot of the pass, discover Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp. Here, a cast of sourdoughs and dance hall girls entertain you with a hilarious melodrama and recite poetry by Robert Service, the "Bard of the North." Learn the art of gold panning and try your luck in the Liarsville gold fields, where you're guaranteed to find the precious metal that drove stampeders wild with gold fever. Head to the barbecue for freshly grilled wild Alaska salmon, baked chicken and a variety of delicious side dishes. After lunch wander through the camp, enjoy the nearby waterfall and have your picture taken with the dance hall girls or the camp's lovable mascot, an Alaska malamute.

RED ONION SALOON
The grand finale of your adventure is a visit to the world-famous Red Onion Saloon. The madams fill your glass with Alaskan Amber beer, wine or root beer and throw a private party in the prestigious upstairs brothel. Hear incredible tales of the girls who worked in these historic rooms and see artifacts left by Skagway's "soiled doves." Embrace the true spirit of 1898 and get ready for the experience of a lifetime.
Till next time - keep on rollin',
