Daily ramblings from the cold side.....

Friday, January 8, 2010

Well, not much to write about the last couple of days. We got tires on the trailer which made us a day late in our plans to get to Marathon, TX to pick up our mail so now we are here for three days....three VERY COLD days. It's 9:00 and the temp is already 18 degrees. I can't remember the last time the temperatures were so low. It's gotten colder as we travel west...what's up with that? LOL!

We stopped in Ozona, TX for some lunch and I snagged a couple of photos in the parking lot.

We also decided to stand Stu up beside this LARGE shirt and gloves....wonder if they were Paul Bunyon's? LOL!

We continued to see snow as we went west to Fort Stockton. We had planned to spend one night there and then two in Marathon. But we were unable to find the RV park with their directions and we weren't real impressed with the town. So we pressed on to the Marathon Motel & RV Park. I had stayed here in 2007 and knew that Marathon was a quaint little quirky town and the park was great, especially for the price. We managed to snap up two nights at Passport America's discount and one at Good Sam's, total of under $50 for three nights (50 amp, free wi-fi). Oh, the reason we have to stay until Monday...to pick up our mail. We lost a days travel when we got our trailer tires in New Braunfels, otherwise we would have picked up our mail this morning and then headed on. Oh well...

We saw a little wild life on our trip today...first was a very large owl perched in a tree by the side of the road. First time I have seen an owl in day time other than the little burrowing owls outside Tuscon FAMCAMP. Then on the road from Fort Stockton down to Marathon we saw a small herd of Javelina. What a treat...I had heard of them, seen many photos and finally a stuffed one at our visit at Cabela's last week. There were 4-5 adults and a couple of little ones. We passed them too quickly to snap a photo.

The sky was strange as we headed south to Marathon...large cloud bank over us, dropped low in the sky with sun beyond it - probably in the Big Bend area. My camera was inside so I snapped a couple shots with my phone (so not the best quality). Going to try to remember to bring the camera into the truck now that we are out west.

I had to snag this photo as I walked over to the office to register at the park. Shows how cold it is here! Guess we might as well get used to the cold since we have BOOKED a 14 day ALASKAN CRUISE for next June!!! WHOO-HOO!!!

One last thing I have to pass along is a link to an interesting article in the New York Times. Seeing Old Age as a Never-Ending Adventure. Enjoy!

Till next time - keep on rollin',

  1. Hi Donna,

The picture is scary! we are going to be there at the Big Bend area this Tuesday (any recommendations?). I hope the weather will improve. Looks like we are going to miss you... but our plan is to continue west, so maybe at some other place.
